Ayurveda is one of the world's oldest holistic healing systems which was developed more than 5000 years ago in India. Ayurveda is derived from the sanskrit words 'Ayur', meaning 'life' and 'Veda', meaning 'Science/Knowlegde'.
Thus, Ayurveda is translated to "Science of life".
Ayurveda is based on the premise that everything in the Universe, including the human body, is comprised of five basic elements - earth(prithvi), wind(vayu), fire(agni), water(jala), and space(aap).
Each of these elements is present in our bodies in various proportions in what are called 'doshas'.
Keeping these doshas balanced through diet, exercise, herbs, massage and meditation is the basis of Ayurvedic medicine.
Ayurveda is based on the belief that health and wellness depend on a delicate balance between the mind, body and spirit.
It strives to gain insight into the very core of a problem and discover the primary cause of the ailment, whether it originates in improper diet, lifestyle, hereditary, negative thinking or emotional and energetic imbalance.
"Sama dosha samagnischa sama dhatu mala kriyah I Prasanna atma indriya manah swastha iti abhidheeyate II."
- Sushrutha Samhita
Meaning, one is in perfect health when the three doshas ( vata, pitta and kapha), digestive fire (digestion, assimilation and metabolism), all the body tissues and components (dhatus) (the entire physical body), all the excretory functions (the physiological functions of urination and defeacation) are in perfect order with a pleasantly disposed and contented mind, senses and spirit.
The main object of Ayurveda is to preserve and maintain health. Those who are healthy will benefit from Ayurveda by becoming stronger and having more energy ; while those who are sick will be able to bring back their health in a natural way.
